While everyone else was busy causing a mess and having a righteous riot, Alexei on the other hand decided to hide away in the greenhouse—as it was one of the few places where he’d found a very good supply of earthy soil in which to plant one of his favorite flowers![break][break]

Seeing that he needed a big-ass pot since a singular yellow sunflower bloom tended to grow straight, tall, and proud, he decided to look for the biggest pot he could find and began hauling in sacks of earth and hunting for a gardening trowel.[break][break]

The better to shovel dirt with, apparently.[break][break]

Now that he was preoccupied, he began to line the pot he’d found with soil. He knew that his Sunflora was infinitely better at this than him, but he didn’t dare move her from her stubborn spot in the little hamlet that was the garden he tended, he made up his mind to tough this all out.[break][break]

Now the question was: how many sunflower seeds did he need to plant?[break][break]

Just one, right?[break][break]

Or maybe he had to place two? Three?[break][break]

He wasn’t too sure.

The fact the Canaries have a greenhouse takes Bryony by surprise and when she's settled in and done dealing with the events of this morning, she makes her way there. Her Vileplume follows at her side, balancing a pot of herbs on its head.

When she walks in, the first thing that hits her is the smell of damp earth and perfume. Then the humidity does, but the greenhouse is cool enough for it to not be uncomfortable. The last thing she acknwowledges is the presence of someone else.

Like a switch, Bryony's confidence (however little there is) dissipates. She slinks in, being as quiet as possible, but her gaze flickers to the stranger who seems to be stuck on something. Bryony studies him. She worries her lip under teeth. Her Vileplume nudges her and finally she sucks a breath in and takes tiny steps towards him.

"What are you um - what are you planting?" she asks, voice threatening to be lost within the greenhouse.

It doesn’t take too long before he looks up from his private musing the moment he hears someone asking him a question.[break][break]

“Oh, me? Have you—have you heard of sunflowers? Are you familiar with Sunflora?” he asks, hoping not to overwhelm the other.[break][break]

Looking down, he sees that she’s not alone—accompanied by a Vileplume, he thinks.[break][break]

“I’m trying to figure out how many seeds to plant in this pot. Sunflower seeds. I’m not sure if I should go with one, or two?” he continues, turning around to show her a handful of seeds.[break][break]

“What do you think? Two, or three?”[break][break]

He leaves the question lingering in the air, tilting his head to one side out of curiosity.

Bryony straightens, offering a small smile as she looks at the seeds. She tucks a curl of hair behind her ear then folds her palms together near the base of her ribs. "Three is usually good," she answers, wetting her lip. "You um - it's usually good to wrap them in a uh - damp paper towel and leave them for um, for a few days. So they germinate."

Is that saying too much? Is she patronizing him? Her hands tighten together.

"Sunflowers are nice," Bryony adds, more softly than her previous words. She worries the inside of her cheek between teeth.

“Three? Sounds good,” he replies with a smile on his face, before quickly plucking the three that he’s going to plant together in the pot.[break][break]

Back in the garden hamlet he has just on the outskirts of Fortree, there are giant sunflowers, but those were already there when he arrived and started to reclaim the hamlet from the wilderness, so he doesn’t know who’d left them there. Or maybe it was his Ranger friend?[break][break]

He had no idea.[break][break]

“Oh? That helps?” he inquires a few moments later, wondering if he has a scrap of a paper towel with him. Quickly searching his pockets, he sighs. “Aw, I don’t have any…”[break][break]

Pocketing the rest of the seeds, he then looks around the work space, wondering if there’s one he can use in the meantime.[break][break]

“Yes, they’re very pretty. What about you? What’s your favorite flower?” he asks her presently. He could only wonder why her voice was going softer and softer?

Bryony blinks before looking down, head tilting as she considers the question. "I like... feverfew and dandelions," she answers, taking care with each word. Her eyes lift back up and she offers a small smile. "Feverfew are nice and simple but... dandelions are very useful and make a lovely tea."

From the small satchel at her side, Bryony pulls out a pack of tissues. She grabs two from it and offers them out.

"When they start to ah - sprout, then they're ready to plant," she explains, glancing towards the sunflower pot again. "Oh, um! I'm Bryony. By the way."

“Can you show me how to make dandelion tea, then? If…if it’s not too much of a bother?” he asks her, curious as his other hand makes a grab for the Psyduck-sprinkler can and he begins to water the soil. Not too wet or it would become muddy, but not so dry either it would be impossible for anything to get going.[break][break]

Once he felt that it was nice and damp, he was actually debating on whether or not to crack the seeds open—but he knew that it was the seeds that actually helped them take root.[break][break]

“Oh, thank you,” he says presently, taking the proffered pieces of tissue paper and dipping them ever so slightly in the open top of the Psyduck pail, before placing the seeds on the table. This was where he was going to have to get the tissue paper damp enough so he could plant them in safely, and when they were ready to go he could properly place them in the prepared soil.[break][break]

“Ah—I’m sorry, I must’ve been an idiot for not introducing myself. I’m Alexei,” he continues by way of introduction. He wonders if his reputation precedes him, or probably not.[break][break]

Maybe the latter.[break][break]

But all the same it’s a blessed relief when someone doesn’t recognize you…

The name has no value to Bryony, an outsider to the Hoenn region. She might have heard it in passing, but it is not something she recalls in the moment he introduces himself. Her smile is polite and her posture begins to ease, shoulders relaxing.

"I don't mind," she says, checking the soil to ensure he hasn't overwatered. "It's very easy. You, um, can use the roots, leaves, or petals. If you use the roots, you um, roast them. It makes it like a light coffee. The petals make it um, more delicate and sweeter. You clean them, soak them in cold water for a bit, then brew them in hot water for um, maybe five minutes. I like to add citra berry to it."

Her fingers touch together again and she lets her head tilt to the side in thought.

“Knowing what’s edible and what’s not really helps especially if you’re stuck in the wild without food readily available,” he says presently, quickly taking mental notes down as he picked out three seeds and from the handful he had before settling them into the damp tissue paper and wrapping it gently.[break][break]

“How long should this take? A few days, right?” he confirms, gesturing over at the prepared bundle where there were three seeds equally facing each other in the dampness of the white paper. He’d made sure not to make the dirt in the pot too mushy and damp after he’d watered it in preparation for the seeds to be planted in.[break][break]

“Oh?” he inquires again, eyebrows going up slightly. “I only know of rose, and now dandelion thanks to you—which other flowers would make a nice tea? The other kinds I’m aware of are just spearmint… and that’s among the herbs,” he continues sheepishly as he moves over to join her.[break][break]

“What herbs are you going to plant? The only one I have back home is mint,” he admits a few moments later.[break][break]

Well, at least he was going to learn something new today, right?

"I was going to grow mint," Bryony answers, taking a small packet of seeds from her satchel. "It's um, easiest to grow. And since I'm not familiar with uh - with the soil quality it's least likely to die."

She tears the top of the packet off and shakes a few seeds into her open palm. The seeds look like needles in her palm, widened slightly on one end.

“To be fair I’m not as familiar with it, either. I just got here and saw that there were enough gardening supplies to start growing things,” he admits when she shows him the seeds.[break][break]

They looked familiar to the ones he’d planted back home in Fortree, and gives an appreciative nod.[break][break]

“Luckily, I’ve planted these before, so it shouldn’t be too difficult,” he continues a few moments later. “Do you mind if I have some of the seeds?” he asks her quietly, before getting another pot and testing it. The soil in this one wasn’t damp, so he had to make a grab for the Psyduck pail and watered it until it was damp enough, but not too muddy.[break][break]

“I really like the scent of mint,” he adds. Seeing that there are several gardening supplies nearby, he reaches for a garden trowel and passes it to her.[break][break]

“Here, this should be easier to use,” he says presently, passing it to her.

"Of course," Bryony answers. "Um, here. Take what you need. You usually only need a few per pot."

She sets the packet down between them as Alexei grabs the spade for her. She takes it, lips folding together for a brief moment before she smiles. In truth, Bryony prefers to dig into the earth with her own hands. The simple act of labor satisfies her and gives her a greater sense of accomplishment.

She uses the spade anyways, no thank you caught in the bramble in her lungs. Bryony digs it into the soil until a deep enough hole is left behind. She plucks four seeds from her palm and spills them into the dirt and then she covers it, patting the soil back down.

The terracotta planter is large enough that she can plant a few more mint seeds into it.

“Thank you,” he replies, picking up the seed packet and giving it a good shake. While he’s trying to make up his mind on how many he would want to plant, he wonders if placing so many would be such a good idea.[break][break]

Well, I only put like what, three in the small planter by the kitchen window? He thinks to himself as he decides to use five, shaking them out of the packet.[break][break]

Once she’s finished with the garden trowel, he takes it where it’s been left and begins to hollow out a shallow space for the needle-like seeds and places them in the damp soil once he’s decided that the hollow in the pot was deep enough.[break][break]

Making sure to cover the seeds with damp soil once he’s done, he looks up slightly at her question before cracking a smile her way.[break][break]

“I currently live in Fortree, but to be fair, I’m from Unova. Mistralton, to be exact,” he replies. “How about you? Are you from around here?” he inquires, hoping he’s not prying too much.
